Respiratory Therapy
Before modern medicine, a mirror was used to determine death, measuring the absence of breath. Air is the most crucial of all nutrients. We can survive weeks without food and days without water, but only few minutes without air. Maintaining a healthy body and the parts that take in and filter air is important. Polluted air is defined as having more than 2,000 particles in a section ˝ the size of a sugar cube. Many of our cities average 15,000 particles of pollutants. The paradox is we require oxygen in all our cells. Yet, the greatest destructive force in our body is oxygen. Oxygen allows us to extract 20 times more energy from food than anaerobic [without oxygen] bacteria. Yet oxygen also causes our molecules to “rust” or oxidize [change their structure].
Just as the iron outside a house is ruined by oxygen, our body cells can be affected. The answer: anti-oxidants (vitamins C, A, and E), minerals, amino acids and other components. Breathe properly and take the optimal amounts of anti-oxidants and you’ll get all the benefits of oxygen without the toxic side effects.
Exercise for full oxygenation
Lie on your back and place a book on your stomach. Inhale by pushing the book up as high as possible with your stomach. Finish by filling your lungs by expanding your chest. This is a proper breathing technique which can be conducted while sitting, standing and walking.
It is important to first fill the diaphragm (lower lungs) with air allowing oxygen to reach the tiny air sacs that bring oxygen from the lungs through the bloodstream to the cells.
It is important to breathe clean air. Dust pollen, mold, pollutants and other air particulate can create hazards to your health. Make sure your home is well ventilated, cleaned regularly and avoid the build up of dust and mold. The use of vaporizers, inhalers and aromatic herbs may also improve breathing.
